The Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) operates a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Improved Technology Access for Landmine Survivors. It has been designated a national center of excellence in rehabilitation engineering by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), which funds its operation. The RERC develops and disseminates technologies and techniques that improve access to mobility aids for landmine survivors and other amputees. |
|
The main focus of the RERC is the development of “appropriate technologies”– technologies that are most suitable to the limited technical and human resources available in most mine-affected regions-- through the application of research methodologies, the development of mobility aids and the creation of educational materials. All of these activities are designed to be sustainable in mine-affected regions utilizing local resources and personnel; their production is specifically targeted at mine-affected populations and disseminated through a network of rehabilitation service providers in mine-affected regions. |

The goals of the Center are to:
